Yankees Spring Training Game 4: Homer happy win

Yankees-logoNew York Yankees 7 — Detroit Tigers 4

Facing Cy Young award winner, Max Scherzer, catcher Brian McCann hit his first Yankees home run, a solo blast to right field in the second inning. While the catcher of today is doing well, the potential catcher of the future gave the Yankees fans a taste of what he brings to the franchise. Gary Sanchez hit a solo home run to left field to give the Yankees a two-run lead in the third inning.

The second string of players kept the long ball going when left fielder Jose Pirela put a two-run home run into left field in the seventh inning. The Yankees would have a four-run lead when Spring Training story, second baseman Yangervis Solarte, continued his great offensive showing. He would hit a three-run home run in the seventh inning too and the Yankees put together seven runs on four home runs.

Adam Warren made his Spring debut in competition for the fifth spot on the starting rotation. In two scoreless innings, Warren gave up two hits while walking two and striking out one.

Another good showing in today’s game was the cannons of the outfield arms on both sides. In the third inning, Zoilo Almonte would play a single in left field and a runner on second with a throw home to prevent the run from scoring.  In the sixth inning, outfielder Jose Pirela would throw out the batter attempting to stretch their single into a double for the second outfield assist by the Yankees. In the seventh inning, center fielder Ramon Flores prevented a run-scoring play to bring in two when he caught the second run with a throw home.

The Yankees were the victim of a strong arm from Tigers’ right fielder Steven Moya who threw out shortstop Addison Marusnak, trying to score on a single by Solarte.
