Yankees Spring Training Game 8: Cervelli goes deep in loss

Yankees-logoBaltimore Orioles 3 — New York Yankees 2

David Phelps started the Yankees first night game of Spring Training. He got into some early trouble with two singles to start the game but a double play and a ground out kept the rival Orioles off the scoreboard. Phelps would escape two runners in scoring positions to start the second inning too with a weak pop up, a strikeout and a ground out. He wouldn’t be able to escape a third predicament when a leadoff triple in the third inning would come around to score on a ground out.

In 2.2 innings, David Phelps allowed one run on five hits, one walk and two strikeouts.

With one on and two outs, lefty Matt Thornton made his Yankees Spring debut with a quick one-pitch, one out appearance.

In the second inning, former Oriole second baseman Brian Roberts started with a single against Wei-Yin Chen but was erased by a double play from Eduardo Nunez. With two outs, Francisco Cervelli hit a home run to left field to put the Yankees on the board. Brendan Ryan and Russ Canzler would follow with back-to-back singles. Spring story, Yangervis Solarte, would give the Yankees a two-run lead when he hit a run-scoring single to left field.

Minor league reliever Chase Whitley would surrender tonight’s lead in the seventh inning and take the loss. Derek Jeter continues to go hitless this Spring and Jacoby Ellsbury was held hitless tonight. Cesar Cabral and Preston Claiborne pitched the last two innings of tonight’s game and they were scoreless innings.
