Yankees trim roster

The Yankees announced two cuts to their big league camp, optioning RHP Jose Campos to High-A ball in Tampa and RHP Bryan Mitchell to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Both players were added to the 40-man roster this winter.

Campos, 21, was the other player the Yankees acquired when they dealt Jesus Montero to Seattle for Michael Pineda two winters ago. Many scouts believed Campos would ultimately be better than Pineda, but various arm injuries have slowed his progress since the trade. Campos made just one appearance this spring, tossing one inning this week against Detroit. His innings were limited in 2013 after he was sidelined in ’12, so the Yankees plan on being very cautious with him. Campos has a live arm and is still very young, so there’s no rush to develop his talent.

Mitchell, 22, made two relief appearances this spring and didn’t allow a run. He pitched to a 4.71 ERA in 26 starts last year between Double-A Trenton and Tampa. Mitchell was drafted in the 16th round of the 2009 amateur draft out of high school.

The Yankees now have 60 players in camp after these cuts, and will figure to make more as spring training progresses.
