Better late than never

The Yankees did something yesterday that they hadn’t done in almost a year: win a game when trailing after eight innings. Pretty mind boggling.

Their ninth inning rally and extra inning victory against the Cubs was the first time they had come back from the dead since July 23, 2013 when they scored two runs in the ninth inning to defeat the Texas Rangers 5-4.

The Yankee rally that game was lead by Eduardo Nunez and Brent Lillibridge (so 2013), who tripled and singled respectively after Vernon Wells worked a one out walk off closer Joe Nathan. Mariano Rivera came in for the bottom half and closed the door for what was his 32nd save.

The Yanks are still looking for their first walk-off win of the season, but they’ll have to wait until they return to the Bronx on May 30. The mark of a good team is the ability to come back, and especially to come back late in games. The Yankees hope that they can steal a few more W’s when trailing after eight innings as they head into the summer months. That could mean the difference between making the playoffs and just missing out.
