Dellin Betances dominating 2016

Dellin Betances just isn’t fair. His start to 2016 has been unreal and dominant and it’s been so fun to watch. Every week I see a new stat about the 6’8 beast that makes me think, what? How? Who does that!? He looks like he’s playing little league out there.

Betances has recorded 18 outs so far this year, 15 of those K’s have come via strikeout. I pulled out my trusty calculator, that’s 83% of his outs coming from a punchout. His strikeouts per nine innings sits at an unfathomable 22.5. At this rate he could beat his 2015 MLB leading 15.74 with ease. The record for a reliever in a season is teammate Aroldis Chapman’s 17.67 back in 2014.

“That’s like a home run for a hitter. I don’t go for a strikeout right away. I try to get quick outs. If I get two strikes, that’s when I’m going for it.”

With Sunday’s three-K performance against Seattle, the two time All Star became just the third Yankee since 1913 to not allow a run in four straight appearances.ย He has allowed just 3 hits and 2 walks in 6 appearances and has a nonexistent ERA. And all this dominance has not gone unnoticed by the big righty.

“With social media you kind of know everything,” Betances said. “But I try not to pay too much attention to stats. I try to focus on what I need to do to help the team win, but you see everything with social media.”

There’s just no comprehending how filthy he’s been thus far. Batters are hopeless when they stand in the box against him, and I wouldn’t be surprised if their knees shake a little. Team’s haven’t been this helpless since Mariano Rivera was playing. There was rejoice around the league when Mo couldn’t prey on them anymore. But then the ground started to shake, bats were rattling in the dugouts. A 6’8 behemoth strolled into the Bronx, stepped on the mound and made it look like an ant hill. Betances took over Mo’s throne of instilling pure fear in batters. Good luck league. Dellin is dealin’.
