Corban gets the call

The Yankees have called up INF Corban Joseph to fill the vacated roster spot left by Kevin Youkilis, who was officially placed on the disabled list this afternoon with what is being called a lumbar spine strain, according to Bryan Hoch. The move is retroactive to April 28.

The 24-year-old, who was drafted out of high school by New York in the fourth round of the ’08 amateur draft, was hitting .273 with four homers and nine RBIs in 22 games for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this year. 20 of those games came at second base; two of them at first. In his five plus seasons in the minors, Joseph owns a career average of .282. This is his first call to the big leagues.

Andy McCullough of the Newark Star Ledger reports that Joseph will mainly be used as a right-side of the infield guy. GM Brian Cashman said that Joseph struggled at third in the past, and didn’t play there this year. This means that Jayson Nix will handle the duties at the hot corner.

Many suspected that David Adams, the talented third base prospect, would get the call. However, because Joseph is on the 40-man roster and Adams is not, the move involved less moving parts.
