Francisco Cervelli traded

The New York Yankees see yet another catcher go to the Pittsburgh Pirates as Francisco Cervelli has been traded to the National League Central team.

In the 2014 season, Franciso Cervelli saw 162 plate appearances. He hit .301/.370/.432 with a pair of home runs as the backup behind Brian McCann.

In return for the backup backstop, the Yankees acquired left-handed reliever Justin Wilson. The left-handed Wilson, 27, pitched in 60 innings of relief last season and posted a 4.20 ERA with a 1.32 WHIP while striking out 61 batters.

Wilson brings a mid 90’s fastball with a cutter approaching 90 mph. Left-handed batters hit .253/.314/.367 against Wilson with two home runs. Right-handed batters hit .201/.324/.299 against Wilson with two home runs too.

Francisco Cervelli‘s seven year career at the major league level has been riddled with injuries. Hand injuries and concussions have been a common occurrence in the career of this catcher.

With Cervelli’s departure, John Ryan Murphy appears to be the frontrunner for backup at the major league level and Austin Romine could compete for it too.
