Babe Ruth Day

Before the clock strikes midnight I just wanted to write a little something about this day in Yankees’ history. On April 27th, 1947, the New York Yankees held Babe Ruth Day at Yankee Stadium. In front of a pack crowd of 53,339, the Yankees honored the the greatest hitter of all time. Ruth, who was 52 at the time, was dying of throat cancer. It would be the second to last time that the great ‘Bambino’ would grace the stadium that had been dubbed “The House that Ruth Built.”

Ruth won 7 World Series titles, a twelve time American League home run champion with record career total 714 home runs that wasn’t to be broken until 1974 by Hank Aaron. Ruth had his greatest offensive season in 1927, knocking 60 homers, 165 RBIs and batted .356 in 151 games. I can go on and on about Ruth’s numbers, but we’re all well aware that he was the greatest player in the history of the game. George Herman “Babe” Ruth died on August 16th, 1948 at the age of 53. Ruth’s number 3 was retired in 1948, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1936.
