February 26, 1935 – Babe Ruth Released By Yankees

On this date in 1935, after 15 incredible seasons with the New York Yankees, Babe Ruth‘s career with the Bronx Bombers comes to an end when he is released by the team. After hitting the first home run in the first ballgame ever played at the newly built Yankee Stadium, the cathedral on the corner of River Avenue and 161st would go on to be nicknamed ‘The House That Ruth Built’. During his tenure with the Yankees, Ruth would hit .349, with 659 HRs, and 1,978 RBIs while leading the team to 4 World Series titles.

The “Great Bambino” signs a 3-year contract with the Boston Braves as Vice President, assistant manager, and active player. Braves Owner Emil Fuchs does not give an exact amount that they pay Ruth; however, he does indicate that they are paying him more than he earned during the 1934 season. As an active player with the Braves, Ruth was a large box office draw up until June when he retires as an active player. During the 1935 season, Ruth played in 28 games, hitting .181, while knocking out 6 HRs.
