On June 3, 1932, Lou Gehrig became the third player, first in the 20th century, to hit four home runs in a single game. He was the first and only Yankee to accomplish this feat. He was inches away from having five, but Philadelphia Athletics center fielder Al Simmons robbed it with a leaping catch at the center field fence. After the game, manager Joe McCarthy told him, “Well, Lou, nobody can take today away from you.”

The Iron Horse went 4-6 with six RBIs and the Yankees, despite committing five errors, won the slug fest 20-13. The Yanks piled up a total of 50 bases on 23 hits. The two teams combined for 77 total bases.

Brooklyn Dodgers first baseman Gil Hodges, who also hit four homers in one game, once said, “Gehrig had one advantage over me. He was a better ballplayer.”

18 players in MLB history have hit four homers in one game.
