On this date in Yankees history: Billy Crystal takes his cuts

BRONX, N.Y. — The best part about baseball is how fun it is. On this date in 2008, actor, comedian and lifelong New York Yankees fan Billy Crystal had his wish come true.

Crystal joined the Yankees in an exhibition game in Tampa, against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He served as DH or “designated Hebrew” as he joked.

Crystal, who was wearing No. 60 in honor of his 60th birthday, managed to foul off a pitch against southpaw Paul Maholm, before striking out.

After the game, the big-time Mickey Mantle fan told reporters, “it was surreal,” and “it was great.”

Fun stuff.
