This day in Yankees history: Martin’s mash melts Mets

BRONX, N.Y. — This date in 2012 marked a Subway Series first, as far as the New York Yankees and New York Mets are concerned.

Martin Hits Walk-Off HR; Yankees Beat Mets 5-4 To Sweep Series ...

Yankee catcher Russell Martin clobbered the first walk-off homer in the history of the series, dating back to 1997.

With the Yankees trailing 3-0 in the seventh inning, Martin got the pinstripes on the board with a two-run tater to right, off Jon Niese.

After the Yankees gained their first lead at 4-3 in the eighth inning, a blown save in the top half of the ninth by Rafael Soriano, set up Martin’s heroics in the home half.

On a full-count, Martin crushed the Jon Rauch offering deep to left for the 5-4, walk-off winner.
