On this day in Yankees history – World Series title number 27

On this day eight years ago, the Yankees defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 7-3 to capture their 27th World Series Championship in franchise history. It was the team’s first title since beating the Mets in the 2000 Fall Classic.

Hideki Matsui was named World Series MVP after going 3-for-4 with a homer and six RBI in the clinching game six. Overall in the series, Matsui hit .615 (8-for-13) with three homers and eight RBI.

Andy Pettitte started game six for New York, going 5.2 innings while giving up three runs on four hits. He would eventually get the win, having picked up the W in each clinching game during the playoffs that year.

Pedro Martinez started for the Phils, and gave up four runs early thanks in part to Matsui’s two-run home run in the second inning. After a two run single in the third from Godzilla, the Yankees were well on their way towards victory. Matsui would later drive home two more runs with a double, cementing his place in World Series history with one of the most impressive performances on the game’s biggest stage. The Phillies tacked on a few runs, but with Mariano Rivera coming out of the bullpen for a five-out save, the game was over.

Shane Victorino rolled over on a ground ball to Robinson Cano, who fielded it cleanly and tossed it over to Mark Teixeira at first to end the game. Before Teix even caught the final out, the Yankees had already stormed the field to celebrate.
