On Sunday night following the Yankees’ regular season finale against the Miami Marlins, Bernie Williams took to social media to congratulate DJ LeMahieu on winning the American League batting title. LeMahieu is the first Yankee to accomplish this feat since Bernie in 1998, when he hit .339 in 128 games.
Congratulations to @DJLeMahieu on not only winning, but running away with both the 2020 AL and @MLB Batting Titles.
DJ- welcome to the club!! Since I first saw you in Spring Training last season, I have been awed at your preparation, approach, and performance at the plate, (1/3) pic.twitter.com/gB1zIU7ncL— Bernie Williams (@bw51official) September 28, 2020

LeMahieu has been a godsend since he signed with the Yankees prior to the 2019 season. Last year, he finished second in the AL with a .327 average behind Tim Anderson. This year, LeMahieu hit .364 to lead all of baseball.
I wish LeMahieu could have celebrated the batting title in front of a packed Yankee Stadium. It would have given us a highlight to go right alongside Bernie, who came out of the dugout to a standing ovation wearing his shower shoes in 1998.
