Report: Yankees and Mets to play on 20th anniversary of 9/11

Everyone around the United States remembers the September 11 terrorist attacks, but for New Yorkers it’s personal.

You probably remember where you were (I was in Ps.71 in the Bronx at the time), who you were with, and what you were feeling as the towers toppled to the ground. Some days it feel like a lifetime ago, and others like it was yesterday; but the reality is that next year will mark 20 years since that horrible day in 2001.

MLB has decided they will commemorate the 20th anniversary during their 2021 season by matching up New York’s cross town rivals to play at Citi Field.

The 2021 game will be only the second time that both The Yankees and The Mets will play at home on the anniversary of 9/11.

Both teams were a big part of the healing process for New York after September 11 so it’s only fitting they would be part of the 20 year anniversary.

The Mets took a trip to ground Zero after the clean up to exchange hats with first responders which they wore throughout the remainder of the season. They opened up Shea Stadium to house supplies and volunteers.  When baseball first returned to New York 10 days after the attack, the Mets won the game with a go-ahead homer by Piazza to bring joy to many New Yorkers who were in despair.

The Yankees opened up their home to fans to help the city return to normalcy and eventually made it to the World Series where President Bush to threw out the first pitch. The whole country was rooting for New York.

The 2021 New York match up is the perfect way to remember and honor those we lost. Aaron Boone thinks that this is just what the city will need.

The official 2021 season schedule will be released Thursday.
