Over the weekend, I spoke with Robert Flores (@RoFlo) on The Bronx Pinstripes Show. Robert co-hosts MLB Network’s “MLB Central” weekdays at 10:00 AM with Lauren Shehadi and Mark DeRosa, and this Wednesday’s program will broadcast live from Yankee Stadium before the Yankees and Padres game.

As Yankees fans, we tend to live in our bubble where every day a new player goes on the injured list and guys like Thairo Estrada continue to thrive. But I also enjoy some of the more broad topics and issues facing baseball today. One of those is analytics and how it is more prevalent today than ever before.

Robert talked about how he blends an old school mentality with new analytics on his show, and that there is a place for each kind of baseball fan. But when it comes to being “clutch,” RoFlo thinks that’s real.

I couldn’t agree more with RoFlo. It’s preposterous to ignore hot and cold streaks or clutch stats. I understand that past performance in a certain situation is not indicative of future outcomes, but players are also human, and some guys thrive in high leverage situations while others struggle. My favorite thing to cite is that Derek Jeter’s lifetime batting average was .310 over 12,602 regular season plate appearances and .308 in 734 postseason PAs. Jeter was the same player whether the situation was game 25 vs Kansas City or Game 4 of the World Series vs Arizona.

Be sure to check out the full episode. RoFlo and I also talked about:

  • Who the “face” of MLB is
  • One rule Robert would implement in today’s game
  • Robert’s Astros fandom and how it has evolved now that he covers baseball on a national level
  • The best MLB video games of all time
  • How the American League will shake out

On Thursday, Mike Petriello, writer and host of the Statcast Podcast for MLB.com, joined the The Bronx Pinstripes Show to talk about the first month of Yankees baseball. Here are some key things discussed.

The Yankees invest in analytics at all levels

One question that has been burning in the mind of every Yankees fan — and probably Cardinals fan’s minds too — is how did Brian Cashman and his team find Luke Voit?

Voit is currently riding a 41 game on-base streak during which he’s hitting .316 with 16 homers and 23 walks. Since August 1 of last year, Voit ranks 7th in baseball with a 172 wRC+ — higher than players like J.D. Martinez, Bryce Harper, and Aaron Judge.

On the podcast, Petriello talked about how the Yankees have given Voit the tools to succeed and he has embraced them. The Yankees invest time and resources in minor league analytics, make sure the data is accessible to players at all levels, and educate them on how to apply it to their performance. It is a big reason why Didi Gregorius has been one of the best hitting shortstops in the league for the past two seasons and why Aaron Hicks ranked third in WAR for center fielders last year. The Yankees, along with teams like the Dodgers and Astros, find a talent they like and give them the tools to succeed.

Gio Urshela won’t sustain this level of offensive production

To date, Urshela has picked it at third base and posted a shockingly good 139 OPS+ (144 at the time of this recording). As Petriello points out, one of those is not sustainable.

Because of injuries, Urshela has a chance to play and made the most of it, but a lot of his offensive production may be due to luck in a small sample. Gio has never hit in his professional career and, barring his luck continuing, will probably regress at the plate. The Yankees should be grateful for his contributions while Miguel Andujar has been sidelined.

The Yankees still hit the ball very hard

Ok, this isn’t a groundbreaking takeaway because the Yankees are notorious for hitting lasers. But how are they ranked 1st in MLB for average exit velocity with many of their monster freak hitters injured?

For one, Aaron Judge was leading baseball for average exit velocity before he went down. DJ LeMahieu is also an above-average all around hitter who has a 50% hard hit rate. And obviously Luke Voit has been a consistent force all season.

When looking at the lineup, the only players who are below league average for hard hit rate are Brett Gardner, Gio Urshela (see above section), and Tyler Wade. Even with injuries, there is not a clear black hole in the order.

Should we be concerned with Judge’s pre-injury performance?

Despite leading baseball for average exit velocity, Judge’s slugging percentage is down this year. His 2017 was so insanely good that it may never happen again, but that’s ok! Before he went on the IL Judge was having a very similar season to last, which was still All Star level production. Don’t read too much into his down SLG-% in just three weeks of action.

How good can Domingo German be?

German has been a huge lift for the Yankees rotation. Last season he showed signs of greatness. He ranked highly in swing-and-miss percentage but wasn’t consistent enough to succeed in the majors. He also struggled with walks and got hit hard in high leverage situations. We’re seeing a different German in 2019.

This year German has been nails with men on base, which has kept his ERA low. His fastball is in the 93rd percentile for spin rate which helps him get more weak fly balls and foul tips. On most other rosters German would be relied on to be a top-3 starter, but as Petriello discusses, the Yankees have the luxury of treating German like their 6th or 7th starter on the depth chart despite his top-end performance.

Who will win the AL East?

Tampa is for real and things could not have gone better for them in April. The Red Sox are starting to turn it around and the Yankees are starting to get healthy. Who will be atop the division at the end and could we see all three teams in the playoffs? Check out the full segment with Mike below to find out (55-minute mark).

On Monday’s episode of The Bronx Pinstripes Show, co-host Andrew Rotondi spoke with Yankees beat reporter Bryan Hoch about the Yankees slow start, Gio Gonzalez, Aaron Boone, and more.

Hoch has been the Yankees beat reporter for MLB.com since 2007, and has seen the very best and worst of this team since then. In addition to his great insight and information about the current state of the team, Hoch told some great stories from his time covering the Yanks on the episode.

As of right now, however, the biggest issue regarding the Yankees is obviously their injuries. Despite the fact that basically half of the team is on the Injured List, Hoch isn’t overly concerned and predicts that some of the Yankees star players will return to the lineup sooner than later.

“The Yankees have been taking a lot of hits to the mouth lately, it’s like going up against Mike Tyson in the 1980’s. But like I said, it’s not going to be like this all year, and they’ll start to get some of these guys back. I think the Gary Sanchez thing will be short term, Giancarlo Stanton will be relatively short term… you get those two guys back and things start to look a little more formidable and a little more like what you thought it was going to be.”

Hoch gave further information and injury updates on Aaron Hicks, Luis Severino, Miguel Andujar, and Dellin Betances. Hicks’ injury is a bit of a mystery and his timetable is still in question. The Yankees are hopeful Severino and Betances will return, but they are weeks — probably months — away. Andujar is another issue. As Hoch says, it is a matter of how much the Yankees want Miggy’s bat in the lineup versus potentially jeopardizing next season if things don’t go well.

On the lighter side of things, Hoch told an awesome story from 2009 about former Yankee Nick Swisher and how he used to make Brett Gardner carry around a giant boom box so that the clubhouse always had music playing during the season. Listen to the entire story below:

Hoch also talked about:

  • Gio Gonzalez’s upcoming opt-out day and what his plans could be
  • What Jacoby Ellsbury‘s empty locker looked like and whether or not there was dust piling up
  • “State of the team” quotes from Aaron Boone and Aaron Judge and why Judge is the go to guy
  • The three types of “dad” managers the Yankees have had: the “cool” dad (Boone), “stern” dad (Girardi), and “good” dad (Torre)

The segment was a lot of fun to listen to but most importantly it was super informative, as Hoch is one of the smartest Yankees guys on the planet. Make sure to give it a listen here!

On Monday, The Bronx Pinstripes Show spoke with Ben Badler, Senior Writer for Baseball America.

Badler focuses on all things MLB prospects – scouting reports, rankings, and in-depth analysis on talent. Badler also has great knowledge of the international market, which he shared on the show.

In a conversation with Scott Reinen, Badler discussed how he evaluates talent and ranks prospects, the international signing process, the current top international prospect Jasson Dominguez, and more.

When evaluating talent, Badler said he uses a mix of the “eye-test” and the numbers, but it also depends on what kind of prospect he is looking at. For example, he prefers to evaluate international prospects in person because scouts don’t have the same type of access to them as they would high school or college players in the United States. Badler added that scouts tend to know who the premium prospects are in the states, but not internationally. Badler had a lot of very interesting things to say on the topic, especially related to the inner workings of the international market.

As it relates directly to the Yankees, Badler gave his input on Estevan Florial, the Yankees top-rated prospect. Florial had his 2018 season cut short due to a hamate bone injury in his wrist which required surgery. This led to Florial being left off Baseball America’s 2019 Top-100 MLB Prospects list, which Badler explained.

“It’s a tough one like you said because of the injury – how much of that injury was masking the performance that he had this year which was just ok… it’s tough especially because those hamet injuries can really zap your power.”

However, Badler did go on to give a mini scouting report of Florial and reasons why he thinks the young outfielder still has sky-high potential.

“But with [Florial], I think the strengths are still the same that we’ve always seen, he’s just got a ton of tools – bat speed, arm strength, the speed, really fast hands, he’s got the power I know he didn’t really show all that much of in games this year. That I’m not super concerned about by any means, this guy definitely has above average raw power, and the bat speed and strength that shows ‘alright this guy is legit, there’s more power in there than what he showed.'”

In addition to Florial, Badler gave his input on other key Yankees prospects including Michael King, a pitcher who may see action in the Bronx later this year, Antonio Cabello, a young outfielder who converted from catcher, and some young arms in the system to keep an eye on.

Badler’s knowledge of prospects ranging from international to team-specific is vast. You can listen to the full interview HERE or below starting at the 01:20:00 mark.

Josh Stowers was traded to the Yankees about two weeks ago, but it didn’t take long for him to join The Bronx Pinstripes Show.

On another special Tuesday edition, the newly-acquired Yankees outfield prospect talked to Scott Reinen about the trade, his Chicago roots, and much more.

Stowers was a part of the three-team trade that sent Sonny Gray to the Cincinnati Reds. In addition to sending Gray to the Reds, the Yankees also sent second baseman Shed Long to the Mariners in exchange for Stowers.

Stowers was selected by the Mariners with the 54th pick in the 2018 MLB Draft after a successful college career with Louisville. He was named 1st Team All-ACC after his final season, a season in which he led the conference in stolen bases while ranking 2nd in OBP, T-5th in RBI, and 8th in batting average. He also ranked top five in all of Division I baseball in stolen bases and runs.

On the show, Stowers talked about his own scouting report, and highlighted that stealing ability as one of his strengths.

“I’m pretty good at stealing bases, and that’s pretty much why I walk a lot… I kind of use the stealing bases neck that I have to help out the hitter because you know [my] scouting report is about steals, so it usually gives the hitter a good pitch to hit. So even if I don’t steal the base, they’ll get a pretty good fastball that’s gonna be around the zone and I can go from first to third or first to home depending on where it’s hit.”

Stowers also discussed his preparation at the plate and what goes into account before he faces a pitcher.

Stowers acknowledged that there is value to analytics and that they matter to an extent, but he doesn’t want to overload himself with information while he’s at the plate. However, he emphasized the importance of watching his mechanics, mentioning that he always brings a tripod to video himself so he knows the difference between “a good hitting day and a bad hitting day.”

On the episode, Stowers also talked about:

  • His reactions and thoughts after being traded to the Yankees
  • His childhood in Chicago and what other sports he played
  • Whether he’s a dog or cat guy (as we know, this can say a lot about a person)
  • His takeaways from his first year of pro ball

Make sure to listen to the full interview to hear him talk about all of this and more!

In a special Tuesday edition of The Bronx Pinstripes Show, WFAN’s Sweeny Murti joined the show to talk about the MLB off-season and Yankees topics.

Murti works as the Yankees beat reporter for both WFAN and SNY, and also hosts the pregame and postgame shows for Yankees radio broadcasts. Sweeny has been covering the Yankees since 2001 and has joined the podcast in the past.

Murti had some positive things to say about the Yankees, noting that he believes their roster has improved since the start of last season, especially the starting pitching.

“I think they’ve made improvements… They still have a really good bullpen, obviously. I think people are failing to put this in the proper perspective, but Happ and Paxton to start the season in the regular rotation is a lot different than what the Yankees had last year. So I think that you have to count that as a rotation upgrade,” said Murti.

However, he also voiced his concern about the question marks surrounding the infield.

“I don’t know what to expect yet from the infield, I don’t know that picture is complete yet. That’s the part that is still really kind of fuzzy to me.”

Additionally, Murti discussed the Machado and Harper saga and the reasons why they aren’t signed yet. For Harper, Murti believes that he could be asking for a too much considering his inconsistencies over the past few years.

“I’m a fan of what Bryce Harper can still be over the course of the next 10 years. I think he’s a phenomenal talent. But if you’re building statistical models based on what he’s already done and what he’s going to do, then maybe it doesn’t equate to what the emotional side of you says he is going to do or might be, and that’s why you’re sitting here thinking where the numbers are gonna go.”

You’ll have to go listen to hear what he said about Machado!

In the conversation, Murti also addressed:

  • The “out of control” offseason baseball news reporting and how he goes about breaking news
  • The lack of big spending in free agency and why Harper and Machado have not yet signed
  • The notion that Hal Steinbrenner and the Yankees are being “cheap” this winter
  • Mariano Rivera being the first player in history to receive 100% vote for the Hall of Fame
  • The never-ending debate of players attached to steroids, namely Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens

With a lack of Yankees news the past few days, make sure to listen to the full episode of The Bronx Pinstripes Show for your mid-week Yankees fix.

In a special Tuesday edition of The Bronx Pinstripes Show, Yankees first round draft pick and prospect Anthony Seigler joined The Bronx Pinstripes Show for a conversation with co-hosts Scott Reinen and Andrew Rotondi.

How did Seigler become an ambidextrous player?

The Yankees selected Seigler with the 23rd overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft, and since he has appeared in 24 games for Yankees minor league clubs. However, while the 19-year-old catcher may seem like a normal prospect on paper, he is much more unique than that. That is because not only is he a switch hitter, but he can throw both lefty and righty.

The ultra-rare talent is something that has separated Seigler from the pack. When asked how he learned this unteachable skill, Seigler said it just came naturally to him.

“I don’t remember how it happened, I’ve just been doing it my whole life so I just thought I was born like that. My dad said when I was little, we used to have little wiffle balls in the house and if one was over to my left, I’d pick it up and throw it lefty back to him and if one was to my right, I’d pick it up righty and throw it back to him. Once he started to notice that, everyday we’d go back and forth – one day lefty and one day righty and I’ve been able to do it ever since.”

While Seigler can do most things ambidextrous (including golf), he did admit that he can’t shoot a basketball righty and it’s harder for him to throw a football with his right hand.

What was draft day like for the youngster?

In addition to his ambidextrous talents, Seigler also reflected on the day he was drafted by the Yankees. Notably, Seigler said that the first person from the Yankees organization to reach out to him after being drafted was actually manager Aaron Boone.

“I was just amazed… I thought it was going to be the scout that was in my area but just being able to talk to [Boone] was amazing, I was speechless, I didn’t know what to say to him.”

Other topics discussed on the podcast:

  • Seigler’s offseason training with the Yankees
  • How he became a catcher and why he loves the position
  • Switch hitters that he has looked up to and tried to mimic
  • His friendship with Clemson Quarterback and (recent) National Champion Trevor Lawrence
  • His lack of having a nickname (you know what to do, Pinstripers)

Be sure to give the exclusive conversation a listen for your Tuesday Yankees fix!

On the most recent episode of The Bronx Pinstripes Show, Andrew and Scott were joined by MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch to discuss the current state of the Yankees as they head into September.

Hoch has covered the Yankees for MLB.com since 2007, and also authored the book The Baby Bombers, (which is now available at your favorite books store — shameless plug for our guy, Bryan).

Hoch and the guys discussed some of the biggest storylines around the team, including the current first-base dilemma with Greg Bird and new addition, Luke Voit.

“Voit’s been a nice little surprise to this team. I think that his first impression wasn’t great, he went down there to Triple-A to straighten things out, came back on a mission and really tried to not do too much… he’s obviously done that, had a big series down in Baltimore, impacted the ball a lot,” said Hoch. “In Bird’s case… I think a lot of what you’ve seen is fatigue. Having an aborted spring training there, missing a lot of the season, coming back after not playing a full season last year, I think there’s definitely something to that.”

Hoch also discussed Luis Severino’s most recent start and why he has struggled during the second half of the season. Hoch pointed out some of Severino’s strengths from the game, talking about the life on his fastball and that he was mixing up his locations by pitching up and down in the zone well. Hoch also emphasized, however, that he doesn’t read too much into a decent start against the Orioles after you take into consideration who they’re trotting out there.

Additional Topics Discussed with Hoch

  • The chase of the Red Sox and whether or not a division title is possible
  • Aaron Judge’s injury and when the Yankees can expect him back
  • Clint Frazier and an update on his recent baseball activities
  • Whether or not Severino should be the starter if the Yankees reach the Wild Card
  • If anything negative happened inside the clubhouse after Gary Sanchez’s “HustleGate”
  • What September call-ups will make an immediate impact

To hear what Hoch had to say about all of this and more, be sure to check out today’s full episode of The Bronx Pinstripes Show on your favorite podcast platform.

Another day, another Yankee victory.

Beginning the game with six hitless innings from rookie Domingo Germán, things were looking up for the Yankees. However, after pulling the young righty before the seventh, the bullpen could not maintain the tie, promptly allowing four runs to score.

Dellin Betances, who has looked dominant of late, was sent out for the dreaded second inning of work late in the ballgame. He ended up only allowing one run to cross, but left a couple men on base for Jonathan Holder, who gave up three runs which extended the lead to 4-0.

Offensively Neil Walker is starting to heat up and had himself a solid afternoon, roping a game-tying double off Cleveland closer Cody Allen. With the score tied at four, the Yankees had one thing on their mind: Walk off.

After the Bombers stormed back, it set the team up for a special way to conclude the game. This just happened to be a game-winning, three-run blast off the bat of Gleyber Torres, his second-career home run.

Check out what German, Sanchez, Betances, Walker, Torres, and Boone had to say following the Yankee’s 7-4 win over the Indians:

Miguel CANdujar, am I right?

After scoring the first five runs only to allow the opposing team to storm back and tie the game at five, Miguel Andujar saved the day for the Yankees. The rookie third baseman walked it off against Cleveland last night, as the men in pinstripes took game one by a score of 7-6.

CC Sabathia dominated in his latest start facing his former team, throwing six scoreless innings while allowing zero runs to score. The 37-year-old southpaw succeeded in lowering his already minuscule ERA to 1.39.

In addition to Andujar’s walk-off hit, the OTHER Yankee rookie, a guy that goes by the name of Gleyber Torres, clubbed his first Major League home run tonight. It was a memorable night for the 21-year-old phenom, one in which he looks to build on going forward.

In a ballgame that appeared to belong to the Astros, the Yankees were able to fight back to steal the win, and the series, for that matter.

Masahiro Tanaka certainly did his job this afternoon, providing six strong innings without allowing a run while on the mound. Chad Green did end up surrendering his three inherited runs from Tanaka, but three earned runs in six innings still counts as a solid performer, especially against the powerhouse offense Houston features.

Green did not have a typical day at the office in his latest outing, giving up an additional two runs after allowing Tanaka’s original three to score.

On the offensive side, rookie sensation Gleyber Torres was the hero this afternoon, driving in three RBI that tied the game at 5 late in the battle.

In addition, Aaron Judge joined the RBI party, hammering home an RBI single to add to the Yankee run total of six.

All of this resulted in a 6-5 Yankee victory over the Astros and gave them an impressive 3-1 series victory.

It’s Luis Severino‘s world, and we’re all just living in it.

Talk about a stellar performance! The young ace certainly made a statement against the world champs on Wednesday by pitching complete game shutout. Not only did Severino mute a potent Astro offense, but he allowed Aaron Boone‘s bullpen a full day-off leading up to Thursday’s dreaded day game after a night game.

As far as the bats go, Giancarlo Stanton was tonight’s stand-out performer, cranking an opposite field homer early in the game and later pulling a ball into the left field seats. Additionally, he managed to rip a double that would allow Aaron Hicks to score.

Tyler Austin left the game early after jamming his hip on a diving play at first, but is confident he’ll be ready for tomorrow afternoon’s game.

Gary Sanchez was tonight’s hero, sending a Ken Giles‘ pitch to dead-center, giving his squad a 3-0 lead late in the fight. FYI: Gary’s home run was certainly more powerful than the punch Giles delivered to his face.

As for Yankees pitching, Jordan Montgomery looked great in the first inning, but left early after experiencing tightness in his elbow. In relief, Domingo German saved the pitching staff, hurling four innings of shutout ball.

In a rematch of last season’s American League Championship Series, the Yankees and Astros squared off Monday night in Houston to open a four-game series. This matchup certainly had a postseason vibe to it, featuring a tight pitcher’s duel between Sonny Gray and Charlie Morton.

Although the Yankees got the short end of the stick in their latest bout against the ‘Stros, Gray bounced back against one of the best lineups in baseball. The righty turned in six strong innings allowing only two runs to cross the plate. Offensively, Brett Gardner was responsible for the lone Yankee run, delivering an RBI single that scored Gleyber Torres.

Offensively, the Yankees certainly lived up to their Bronx Bomber nickname tonight, scoring 14 runs on 13 hits. Gary Sanchez drove in two runs and Miguel Andujar stayed hot, collecting an extra base hit for the seventh consecutive game. Tyler Austin and Didi Gregorius each drove in four, and Giancarlo Stanton had perhaps his best all-around game as a Yankee so far, going 4-for-4 with a homer, two RBI and three runs scored.

Gleyber Torres also collected his first career hit.
