Happy Birthday Willie Randolph

The newest member of Monument Park turns 61 years young today.

The Brooklyn native came to the Bronx in 1975 in a trade from the Pirates. Always a fan favorite, WillieĀ was named co-captain with Ron Guidry from 1986-1988. He was a great defensiveĀ second baseman withĀ a knack for turning a double play, despite never gettingĀ a Gold Glove Award.

In 1980 heĀ led the league in walks (119) and was second in the AL in on-base percentage (.427), eighth in stolen bases (30) and ninth in runs (99) winning the Silver Slugger Award. He also batted .332 leading off the inning and .340 with men in scoring position.Ā In 1987 he hitĀ .305, leading the league in at bats per strikeout (18.0), and was fourth in the AL in OBP (.411) and ninth in walks (82).

He left the Yanks in free agency in 1988, but wouldn’t be gone long. He came back as a coach in 1994 serving as bench and base coach until 2004. He was a fiveĀ time All Star while in pinstripes, six times total, and won two World Series as a player (1977 & 78) and four as a coach (1996, 1998-2000.)

Willie was honored at Old Timers Day on June 20 this year getting his plaque in monument park. He gave an on the fly speech that showed just how much he truly loves being part of the Yankees family. The Bronx Faithful says happy birthday Willie!
