Game 128: Grand History

In a game that started with a 7-1 deficit, many Yankees fans were discouraged and turned away. Those that stayed, witnessed MLB history as the Yankees emerged victorious with a ridiculous score of 22-9.

The Yankees had Phil Hughes start today’s afternoon game and he was not good. Hughes lasted just 2.2 innings and surrendered 6 runs on 7 hits. Following the 3rd inning, the Yankees offense came to life and made the Athletics pay for their inability to throw strikes.

Russell Martin not only set career-high’s in hits (5) and RBIs (6) but he was a part of the history set by the Yankees offense. His first of two home runs came in the 4th was a solo home run but his second home run came in the 6th of the GRAND SLAM variety. Robinson Cano started the run to history in the 5th inning when he went to right field for his 22nd home run and it was a GRAND SLAM. Curtis Granderson completed the record accomplishment in the 8th inning with his 36th home run of the season, also a GRAND SLAM.

No team in MLB history had hit 3 grand slams in one game and this was accomplished this afternoon.

Curtis Granderson and Robinson Cano each drove in 5 runs. Every Yankee on the starting lineup had a hit except for Mark Teixeira. Every Yankee in the starting lineup had a walk except for Robinson Cano. The Yankees patient approach at the plate was easier as the Oakland Athletics pitchers could not throw strikes as there was a total of 13 walks. When the Athletics did throw a strike, it was usually a hit (22 today) or a home run (5).
