Game 58: Teixeira Turns The Tide

New York Mets 2 — New York Yankees 4

With the Yankees down by 1, Teixeira puts them ahead for the eventual 4-2 win over the New York Mets.

Phil Hughes was only hurt by the long ball in his 6.1 innings of work. Shortstop Omar Quintanilla took Hughes deep in the 3rd inning and a home run in the 6th inning by third baseman David Wright. But this was a quality outing by Hughes as the home runs were the only damage to his line as he struck out 6 and managed to get the win. The bullpen was solid as Boone Logan, Cory Wade, and Clay Rapada got the close game to Rafael Soriano for the save opportunity. With the tying run on base, Soriano got pinch-hitter Jordany Valdespin to fly out to center and get the save.

The Yankees scored early against Mets starter Dillon Gee with an Alex Rodriguez single with Derek Jeter in scoring position in the 1st inning. In the same inning, the Yankees managed to load the bases but Raul Ibanez hit into a double play to end what could have been a big inning to put the Mets in a big, early deficit. The two home runs that Hughes gave up put them behind until the Yankees responded in their half of the 6th inning. With 2 outs and a runner on 3rd, Mark Teixeira drove a hanging curveball by Gee and put it into the short porch in right to put the Yankees ahead. Curtis Granderson put on another run off of Bobby Parnell and put the Yankees one game away from sweeping the first installment of the 2012 Subway Series.
