Preview: Yankees at Cardinals (5/27/14)

David Phelps

David Phelps (1-1, 3.18 ERA) takes on Lance Lynn (5-2, 3.60 ERA) in game 2 of the historic series between the Yanks and Cards. Phelps had the misfortune of pitching against a masterful Chris Sale in his last time out. He took a loss after seven innings of two run ball on six hits and a walk with eight strikeouts in a 104 pitch outing, his best of the year so far. He grew up 15 minutes from downtown St Louis routing for the Cards, now he has to face them. “You grow up thinking about playing on this field,” Phelps said. “Obviously, you don’t think about doing it in a Yankees uniform, but it’s really cool. You walk out and you see the Arch. There’s small things like that that do make it fun.”

Lynn labored through a 30 pitch first inning while allowing two runs on Thursday against Arizona. After that he cruised through the next five innings using just 59 pitches and allowing no runs. He has three quality starts in May out of four.

Cardinals Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith was on had Monday to pay tribute to Derek Jeter during the pregame ceremony. “He always treated me good, especially when I was a younger player,” Jeter said of Smith. “He’s a guy that I admire; I admire his career. When you’re a young player, you remember how guys treat you, and Ozzie always treated me well.”

Notes on the game

Mark Teixeira sat out Monday’s series opener with a sore right wrist, and he is listed as day to day. Joe Girardi hopes to have him back in the lineup Tuesday.
