Preview: Yankees vs Blue Jays (9/21/14)

Masahiro Tanaka (12-4, 2.51 ERA) makes his come back against Drew Hutchison (10-12, 4.51 ERA) and the Blue Jays. Tanaka has been out since July with a partially torn UCL. He reported no issues after throwing 65 pitches in a simulated game on Monday against instructional league hitters and was given the start. “I’m excited, but not overly,” Tanaka said. “I think once I get up on the mound, I have to make sure and see if I’m OK up there, pitching in the big league atmosphere and the big league mound. I’m happy about the fact that I can hopefully contribute.”

Hutchison allowed a three run homer in the first and a solo shot in the second to help the Orioles get six runs, but at one point he retired 15 of 17. “It’s tough to sum up the whole season because it’s been a lot of peaks and a lot of valleys,” John Gibbons said.

After beating out a throw from Jose Reyes with the bases loaded in the fourth inning Friday, Jacoby Ellsbury experienced some pain pain. He remained in to run the bases, but Girardi pulled him before the fifth. An MRI revealed a mild right hamstring strain, but the speed demon hopes he can return before the end of the season. “I hope so,” Ellsbury said. “I’m going to do everything I can to be back as soon as possible. Saturday, we’re just basically going to do as much treatment as possible and see how it responds.”
