Bouncing back from a tough loss, Yankees win in tonight’s game by a score of 8-5 over the Baltimore Orioles.
Phil Hughes showed an aggressive approach to the strike zone and he benefited from it. Through 6 innings, he only surrendered runs in the 6th inning, his last inning of work. Hughes even had a string of 7 straight outs before an error would end up hurting him. In the 6th inning, Nick Swisher took over at 1st base as Girardi looked to strengthen the defense and he was immediately credited with an error. A double would put two on for Adam Jones. The Orioles outfielder would come through again with a home run off of Hughes. This home run was the 33rd home run that Hughes has given up this season, leading the majors. Cody Eppley would also give up a home run in tonight’s game when infielder Robert Andino took him deep. Boone Logan and David Robertson had solid work in tonight’s game. Rafael Soriano pitched with a 4-run lead and gave up a home run to Manny Machado but was able to end the game.
The Yankees offense is almost primarily on the home run and tonight was no different. All of the offense came on the home run tonight. Russell Martin justifies putting him the 5th spot of the batting order when he got the Yankees on the scoreboard with a huge 3-run home run in the 4th inning. Three batters later, Steve Pearce went deep for a 2-run home run. The long ball offense ended with a 2-run home run by Alex Rodriguez, the 300th of his Yankees career. Derek Jeter would continue his MVP-caliber season with a questionably called single that brought in a run. The pitching would nearly need all the offense and would retrieve sole possession of the American League East lead.
The win gives the Yankees back the American League East lead as the season gets closer to ending and the race remains tight.
