Yankees Game 152: Big hit eludes offense in Yankees shutout loss

New York Yankees 0 – Tampa Bay Rays 2

The Yankees looked to continue fighting for their postseason lives against the Tampa Bay Rays.

In the bottom of the first inning. Luis Cessa struggled out of the gate. Logan Forsythe and Kevin Kiermaier led off with singles and Brad Miller came up with a one-out single that scored Forsythe to put the Rays ahead early.

In the third inning against Blake Snell, Gary Sanchez walked with two outs. Billy Butler hit a single and Mark Teixeira walked to load the bases but Chase Headley flew out to strand the bases loaded. After four innings, the Yankees stranded seven batters as the offense could not find the big hit.

Luis Cessa began running out of gas in the sixth inning as he surrendered a two-out solo home run to Corey Dickerson to put the Rays ahead by two.

In six innings, Luis Cessa allowed two runs on six hits. He walked two and struck out six. As is the case many times this season, a quality effort by a starting pitcher supported with little-to-no offense.

Luis Severino followed Cessa’s quality outing with two innings of one-hit baseball that featured three strikeouts. Unfortunately, the offense ended tonight’s game without finding the hit needed to plate any runs as they were shutout.

The Yankees left a total of 11 on base and were hitless in eight at-bats with runners in scoring position.
