Yankees Game 159: CC Sabathia pitches strong to secure sweep of Sox

Boston Red Sox 1 – New York Yankees 5

After an exciting walk-off win, the Yankees look to complete the three-game sweep of the Boston Red Sox.

CC Sabathia started the night with three strikeouts and the offense supported the big lefty. With one out, Jacoby Ellsbury walked and stole second base on the strikeout of Gary Sanchez. On a double to left field, Starlin Castro brought home Ellsbury to put the Yankees ahead by one.

In the fourth inning, Xander Bogaerts tied the game with a solo home run to left field off of CC Sabathia. In the inning, David Ortiz was walked for his second plate appearance and subsequently was replaced to a warm reception for his last appearance at Yankee Stadium.

In the fifth inning, the Yankees reclaimed the lead. Aaron Hicks led off with a bunt single beyond pitcher Henry Owens. He came around to score on a double by Jacoby Ellsbury and the Yankees were back ahead by one.

Against reliever Heath Hembree in the sixth inning, Starlin Castro led off with a single. With one out, Chase Headley walked and the Red Sox turned to lefty Robby Scott. Brian McCann came up with a single against the lefty and the bases were loaded. Then with two outs, Tyler Austin walked with the bases loaded, scoring another Yankees run. A wild pitch by Scott added another run to extend the Yankees lead to three.

After one out in the eighth inning, CC Sabathia was taken out of the game to a warm ovation for a great game and overall season from the veteran. In 7 1/3 innings, CC Sabathia allowed one run on four hits. He walked one and struck out eight in a very strong outing to wrap up his 2016 season.

The Yankees added one more run in the eighth inning when Aaron Hicks plated Brian McCann, who hustled his way from first base and scored with a slide.

Richard Bleier pitched a scoreless ninth inning to complete the win and sweep over the Red Sox.

Despite tonight’s win, the win by the Baltimore Orioles officially eliminated the Yankees from postseason contention.
