The Yankees were held silent by Wade Miley through the first four innings. Mark Teixeira led off with a single. A walk of Chase Headley put two on base with no outs. A force out at third put runners on first and second but Tyler Austin brought the Yankees within two on a single to left field. In the sixth inning, the Yankees came to life with two outs. Billy Butler and Rob Refsnyder got on base with a pair of singles and Chase Headley lined a double into the left field corner to score Butler to bring the Yankees within one.

In the seventh inning, Tyler Austin made it three consecutive scoring innings with a lead off home run to right-center, tying the game 3-3. Following the 3 2/3 innings by Severino, Jonathan Holder, Richard Bleier, Kirby Yates and Tyler Clippard pitched 4 1/3 scoreless to let the Yankees come back to tie the game. In the eighth inning, the Yankees took the lead.
