Yankees Game 84: Defense Miscues Prove Costly

New York Yankees 5 — Boston Red Sox 9

Errors loomed large in tonight’s 9-5 loss to the Boston Red Sox to split the day’s doubleheader.

The Yankees have made a habit of scoring runs in the 1st inning in this series with the Red Sox. In the first game, they put up 5 and in the second game, they put up 4. In tonight’s 1st inning, a Mark Teixeira three-run home run put the Yankees ahead by 3 again. Andruw Jones brought his hot bat from the first game to tonight’s game as he hit his 3rd home run in 2 games. Eric Chavez would also put up a run that would prove to be just a home run in the error-filled loss.

Phil Hughes went 5.1 innings and would give up 5 runs on 10 hits but only 3 of those runs were earned. On a simple fly ball to right-center, Curtis Granderson and recently acquired, former Red Sox outfielder, Darnell McDonald had a miscue and this led to a ball fall between them and allowing a sacrifice fly that brought in a run after an out that should have been easy. A fielding error in the 6th by Derek Jeter put an extra runner on base that would be driven in by a three-run double with the bases loaded by Pedro Ciriaco. A long four-run 7th also included a throwing error by Russell Martin that brought in a run. The lapse in defense loomed large as it extended innings and provided more run-scoring opportunities that never should have happened.

Win – Felix Doubront (9-4)

Loss – Phil Hughes (9-7)
