A Letter to Brian Cashman

Dear Mr. Cashman,

First off, congrats on what turned out to be a pretty decent season, given the aging roster and fairly inept offense in the second half. To even make the Wild Card game with the way the team played the last two months of the season is pretty impressive.

Actually, it’s not that impressive. We’re the YANKEES for Pete’s sake. The Wild Card game is the least we expect as fans, and a loss there just won’t cut it. That being said, there are a few changes that we would like to see heading into this offseason.

First off, don’t stand pat this winter. The whole “let’s trick everyone into thinking we’ll make a move but we really won’t” schtick was cute at the deadline, but now that we’ve failed, we want you to mean business. There are some glaring needs and big holes at some positions that can be filled through free agency. We know, Mr. Cashman, that you’re not shy to pull the trigger, and money is never the issue with this franchise, so why wait for what we need?

Let’s start with the starters. Go get one. I mean, we already have four good starters in Tanaka, Pineda, Eovaldi, and Severino, but we need a good lefty in the middle of that rotation. We’re proud of CC Sabathia for admitting he has a problem and dealing with it, but now the team needs to go out and get a lefty. David Price might be out of even your price range, because of some other needs, but a second-tier starter like Wei-Yin-Chen or Scott Kazmir should fit the bill and provide some stability in the middle of the rotation.

Mr. Cashman, let’s face it, you need to go get an outfielder. The trio of Carlos Beltran, Brett Gardner, and Jacoby Ellsbury just won’t cut it. Beltran’s production is declining and he’s now a liability in the field because of his balky knees. Gardner started out hot, but he can’t be trusted to be that productive for a full season. Ellsbury can’t stay healthy and he’s only producing at a fraction of what the Yankees were looking for when they signed him.

We need a thumper in the middle of the order to revive the offense and keep the runs coming through August and September. Jason Heyward and Yoenis Cespedes have a lot of suitors, but they could be worth the money. Justin Upton will be a little less pricey, but either way us fans would love a move for a quality outfield bat.

Our final request is to upgrade at second base. WE CAN NOT TAKE ANY MORE BRENDAN RYAN. We’ve been blessed to have the likes of Derek Jeter and Robinson Cano in our middle infield, and we long to have the excitement and production there again. We believe in Didi Gregorius, but you need to give him a solid second baseman to partner with.

That being said, you don’t even have to look outside of the organization for this one. We want Rob Refsnyder playing second base. We Β don’t think you gave him a fair shot this year, and he showed that he could produce at the major-league level. Give him 162 games to show that he belongs, and he will prove something to you, Mr. Cashman. We’re in love with our youth but you seem to balk at the idea of having someone that’s not established start for our team. Take a chance, please, and we will be happy and your team just might win a few games.

Have a great winter, Mr. Cashman. The Yankees community eagerly awaits your moves.

P.S- Keep Joe Girardi on a short leash this season. We want a guy that can bring some stability and confidence to this team.
