Girardi: Gregorius returning this weekend, maybe sooner

Yankees manager Joe Girardi told Bryan Hoch of MLB.com that shortstop Didi Gregorius is expected to return this weekend, possibly as soon as Friday against the Orioles at Yankee Stadium.

Gregorius completed his rehab stint with the Single-A Tampa Yankees and went 6 for 14 (.429) in four games, including a home run on Tuesday night. He also looked good in the field, showing no signs of favoring his right shoulder.

One scout in attendance told George A. King III of the New York Post that Gregorius was, “awesome, on time and ready to play [big league games],”

The 27-year-old was injured while playing an exhibition game with Team Netherlands in the World Baseball Classic. Since then, Ronald Torreyes has filled in as the starting shortstop with infielder Pete Kozma handling the role of utility man.

It’s safe to say the Yankees are excited to be getting Gregorius back, as he’s coming off the best season of his career in which he hit .276 with 20 home runs. His Gold Glove-caliber defense will also be a huge upgrade up the middle.
