Ryan back, Pineda to DL

The Yankees have activated shortstop Brendan Ryan from the disabled list, bringing much needed infield defense to the big league club. To make room for Ryan, pitcher Michael Pineda was reinstated after serving a 10-game suspension for using pine tar and was transferred to the 15-day DL with a back injury.
Ryan, 32, might possibly be the best defensive shortstop in MLB. He was traded to the Yankees from the Mariners late last season, and then signed a one year deal in the offseason for $2 million with a $1 million option for a third year. Ryan hit .220 with a homer and RBI last season.
Coming in to 2014, Ryan was expected to be Derek Jeter's back up. However, a back injury sidelined him for the beginning of the season. It will be interesting to see how Girardi uses Ryan, especially in late game situations when optimal defense is preferred.
According to Pineda himself, he will begin a throwing program on Friday. If and when he returns in a little under a month, the Yankees will have some very tough decisions to make with the roster.
