A "Please Don't" for the Yankees' offseason
After hearing the news that the Yankees might be pursuing pitcher Jeff Samardzija, the only words out of my mouth were: please don't. I can't take it anymore. I just can't. The Yankees have a bright future ahead IF they choose to play the young talent in their system (which, by the way, seemed much more productive than the 30+ year olds and All Stars on the team). I'd accept one or two losing seasons if the Yankees had a goal of bringing up the young dudes and eventually competing with a low payroll and most of the team under 30 years old.
But no, no no no. They'll throw a ton of money on free agents developing cataracts. Players that will break down after game 140 of the season. Players that will turn into dust the second after striking out for the third time in a game. Look at the Astros. Look at the Royals. Look at the Cardinals. Look at the Giants. Look at the CUBS FOR CRYING OUT LOUD. Teams that said "Hey, we have some young, talented, and cheap guys in our system! Like momma always said, patience is a virtue! We'll compete in a few years!"
So who is the first player whose name arises after ANOTHER "We were old and injured" season? Jeff, 30 year old, 4.96 ERA, Samardzija. Please don't. Let A-Rod, Ellsbury, Gardner, Headley, McCann and Young wither away. Let CC Sabathia stay in rehab as long as he needs. PLEASE keep Refsnyder, Bird, Severino, and call up guys like Aaron Judge, Mason Williams and Slade Heathcott. Yankees fans have been watching mediocrity sine 2009. I think we're patient enough to watch the kids develop and gel into a team that can win a World Series in a few years.
Here's a list of free agents I wouldn't mind the Yankees pursuing:
Jason Heyward- RF 26 years old
Brett Anderson- SP 27 years old
That's it. Close your checkbook. Cut your credit cards in half. Sit on your hands.
Now, here's a list of free agents that I wouldn't be surprised if the Yankees pursued:
Bartolo Colon- SP 42 years old
LaTroy Hawkins- RP 42 years old
Torii Hunter- RF 40 years old
Ryan Vogelsong- RP 38 years old
Fernando Rodney- RP 38 years old
Julio Franco- 57 years old
Please don't, Brian Cashman. Please don't.
Please. Don't.
