August 20, 1996: Yankees crush Angels 17-6
David Weathers put the Yankees in another early hole this evening, staking the California Angels to a 5-0 lead in the first inning. However, it was all New York after that as they would come back to win 17-6. Weathers didn't even make it out of the first inning. Manager Joe Torre was forced to go to his bullpen early by bringing in Brian Boehringer, who restored some order by tossing five-and-one-thirds innings of scoreless ball. He then handed the ball over to Dave Pavlas and Bob Wickman, who allowed a run in the ninth. The Yankee offense was sparked by homers from Paul O'Neill, Mariano Duncan and Jim Leyritz. Leyritz knocked in five of the Yankees' 17 runs, with Duncan accountable for three. New York put up runs in five straight innings; one in the third, six in the fourth, one in the fifth, four in the sixth and five in the seventh. With Baltimore's win, the Yankees' division lead remains at 5.5 games. Jimmy Key starts against Jason Dickson tomorrow. Box score and current stats
