The Yankees snapped their mini two-game losing streak tonight, defeating the Oakland A's by a score of 5-3.
Dwight Gooden got the start and tossed 5 innings of 2 run ball. He gave way to a trio of relievers who closed out the game, giving up just 1 run in 4 innings.
One of those relievers was Graeme Lloyd, who was acquired before the game from the Milwaukee Brewers. The Yankees shipped Gerald Williams and Bob Wickman to Milwaukee for the Australian lefty. New York also acquired injured shortstop Pat Listache in the deal.
The Yankees had a 4-0 lead after 3 innings, allowing them to relax. Derek Jeter drove in a run with a sac fly in the second, followed by a two-run double from Wade Boggs. Joe Girardi chipped in with an RBI groundout in the third, and Cecil Fielder added a solo home run in the seventh, and the Yankees never looked back. Gooden allowed two in the fifth in what turned out to be his final inning.
The Yankees will look to build on tonight's win tomorrow when Wally Whitehurst makes a spot start for New York against Dave Telgheder.
