Starlin Castro strains right hamstring, Tyler Wade to be called up
Hours after placing Aaron Hicks on the disabled list, the Yankees may have lost yet another one of their most productive hitters: Starlin Castro. Castro suffered a strained right hamstring while running out a groundball in Monday night's game against the White Sox. It's currently unclear how much time Castro will miss, but a strained hamstring almost always sidelines a player for a few weeks. The 27-year-old was having arguably the best season of his career, hitting a robust .315/.350/.490 with 12 home runs and 45 RBI. As of Monday, Castro had received the second-most All-Star votes for second base, trailing Jose Altuve by over a million votes, but sitting comfortably ahead of Jason Kipnis. Taking Castro's place is Tyler Wade, who the Yankees will call up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre tomorrow. The 22-year-old hit .313/.390/.445 in 70 games for the RailRiders after an impressive spring training that had many Yankees fans hoping he'd fill in for the then-injured Didi Gregorius. However, since Wade hadn't played above Double-A Trenton, the Yankees went with Ronald Torreyes instead. Speaking of Torreyes, he'll likely fill in for Castro, with Wade taking over Torreyes' role as utility infielder. Wade can play shortstop, second base, and the outfield if needed.
