Report: Derek Jeter and Jeb Bush teaming up to buy the Marlins
In news you never thought you'd read, yes, former Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter is teaming up with former Florida governor Jeb Bush in an attempt to buy the Miami Marlins. According to the Miami Herald, Jeter and Bush were initially competing against each other, but will now look to buy the team together. Jeter has made no secret of his desire to own a Major League Baseball team, and buying the Marlins makes a lot of logistical sense since he now lives in Tampa year-round. Bush, of course, unsuccessfully ran for president in 2016 but was a popular two-term governor in Florida. His older brother, former U.S. President George W. Bush, owned the Texas Rangers from 1989 to 1998. If the pair is successful in buying the Marlins, Jeter would become manager Don Mattingly's boss. Mattingly preceded Jeter as the Yankees captain and took him under his wing when Jeter was a fresh-faced rookie in 1995. Don't ever say there isn't a circle of life in baseball. It's unclear how close current owner Jeffery Loria is to selling the team, but by the time Jeter has his number retired by the Yankees next month, he may already be working for another organization.
