Derek Jeter reiterates desire to become an MLB team owner
Derek Jeter is down in Cuba as part of Major League Baseball's goodwill tour of the country. During the historic game between the Tampa Bay Rays and the Cuban National Team, The Captain stopped by the ESPN broadcast crew for an interview. Jeter was asked about his current interest in MLB and the teams around the league. "I needed to be away from the game for a year. I didn't watch too many games at all," Jeter said. "I obviously have a lot of friends who're still playing so I talk with them... But as far as following the game I haven't done it." Jeter then admitted that he plans on getting back into the swing of things on what's happening around the league. "I've always been very vocal about my next goal and desires to be a part of an ownership group, so I need to start paying attention." It doesn't sound like Jeets is ready to open up the checkbook just yet. "Do you know how much these teams cost?!" he said. Prospective owners need the approval of the commissioner, so Jeter joked that the first step is to get on the good side of Rob Manfred. This isn't the first time we've heard Jeter talk about owning a ballclub. Even during his playing days, he expressed interest in calling the shots from behind the scenes rather than being a coach in the dugout. Recently, there've been rumors that Jeter was gearing up to buy the Miami Marlins, but The Captain quickly shot that down in typical Jeter fashion. There have also been rumors about Jeter being involved in a group to purchase the Rays, but it gained zero traction as well. As far as seeing Jeter in a uniform again at spring training as a guest instructor? Don't count on it anytime soon. "Oh, I can't even think about that," he told the ESPN broadcast crew. "In terms of being back in a uniform on the field, I can't even answer that question." Regardless, we should expect to see Jeter in an owners box in the near future.
