Game 21: CC Solid For 8

Detroit Tigers 2 -- New York Yankees 6
After the bullpen was needed for 7.1 innings, CC Sabathia gave them the day off with today's 6-2 win to take the series against the Detroit Tigers.
The Yankees offense should have done a lot better than the score indicates. The Detroit pitching staff walked 9 Yankees today. On 4 separate occasions, the Yankees had the bases loaded but could not score more than 2 runs in these situations. The Yankees had 15 left on base in today's game, going 3 for 13 with runners in scoring position, another poor outing in ideal conditions. Curtis Granderson hit a home run that had a dramatic pause in it as the Yankees centerfielder waited to see if former Yankees minor leaguer Austin Jackson successfully robbed him. Curtis Granderson had also walked with the bases loaded in today's game for his 500th career RBI. Alex Rodriguez also brought in a run on a close fielder's choice play for his 1,904th RBI, passing Willie Mays for 8th all-time. Despite Prince Fielder making the most of the short porch in right field, the Yankees were able to put together enough offense.
CC Sabathia took the mound with a set of arms in the bullpen unavailable but with how effective he was, he didn't need any of them today. In 8 innings, Sabathia gave up 2 runs on 4 hits with 8 strikeouts. David Robertson, who didn't pitch in yesterday's game, pitched a scoreless 9th inning with two strikeouts to take the series.
