Game 86: #2998 Hit In A Loss
Derek Jeter started the bottom of the 1st inning aggressively and hit the 1st pitch from Rays starter Jeff Niemann for a double to left center. This was hit number 2,998, making him 2 hits away from 3,000.
Unfortunately, the run to 3k was just a part of a whole game as the Yankees could not manage much offense against the Rays. Robinson Cano hit a solo home run as the only run on the board for the Bombers. The Yankees were 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position. Many of these opportunities also came with less than 2 outs, making this even more frustrating for a Yankees fan.
Bartolo Colon had a rare bad start on his 2011 comeback season. The Rays were on his fastball and made solid content as they scattered 10 hits for 5 runs over 5.1 innings. Colon has primarily been a fastball pitcher this season and it has not become clear whether he has a second or third pitch he can turn to when his initial gameplan is not going the way he intended. His usual astounding control was not apparent in tonight's game as well as he walked 4.
