Gray struggles mightily as Yankees get shutout by Boston
NEW YORK -- A day after a near perfect performance against their rivals, the Yankees were embarrassed by the Red Sox, 11-0, at Yankee Stadium. Boston is now back in first place, atop the American League East.
Things went wrong from the get-go for the Bombers, with Sonny Gray putting his team in a huge six run hole after just two innings of play.
The right-hander just did not have anything going today, giving up six runs on seven hits in what even he called an "embarrassing" start.
It all started with a Rafael Defers first inning grand slam that set the tone for Boston. Then, two more runs came across to score for the Red Sox in the second.
While Adam Warren held Boston scoreless, in a solid two and 2/3 innings, every other New York reliever could not get the job done.
Jonathan Holder and Chasen Shreve each gave up a run, while Giovany Gallegos gave up three earned runs of his own. As for the offense, the Yankees could not get anything done against Chris Sale.
In seven innings of dominant work, Sale gave up just one hit, a Giancarlo Stanton first inning single, to go along with 11 strikeouts.
All in all, nothing went right for New York in this Saturday night matchup.
The Yankees will hope to bounce back as they go for the series victory tomorrow, with Luis Severino facing David Price.
Current Yankees Record: 53-27
