Preview: Yankees at Blue Jays (6/23/14)

After spending three days apart, the Yankees and Blue Jays face off again. Chase Whitley (3-0, 2.56 ERA) will take on Marcus Stroman (3-2, 5.14 ERA) in the series opener north of the boarder. Whitley's last start was against Toronto, he held them to just two runs on five hits and a walk over five tough innings. It wasn't the most impressive outing of the year, but he is at least getting stretched out throwing a career high 95 pitches before handing it over to the pen. "I'm just going to try to stick to my game plan, throwing strikes and getting ahead of guys," Whitley said. "There's some things I didn't do in my last outing that I'd like to improve on." Stroman's last time out he struggled with a high pitch count against the Yankees and lasted just 3 2/3 innings. He threw a career high 98 pitches allowing four hits, three walks and a homer in the short outing. "They were just fouling off good pitches," Stroman said. "It's one of those days where my pitch count got driven up by deep counts and I fell behind."
The Yanks haven't set a date for Michael Pineda's return, but that date could be pushed back even further. He was set for an August return until an MRI on Saturday showed inflammation in his shoulder. He was originally scheduled to throw, but will be shut down for a week. "Our doctor felt that it would not be necessary because it was fairly minor, the amount of inflammation, compared to what it was, that a week would be plenty sufficient," Joe Girardi said.
Notes on the game Yankees are 5-1 against Toronto this year The Yankees scored at least six runs in two of the three games against the Blue Jays last week. First pitch at 7:05 PM on Yes.
