Preview: Yankees at Orioles (8/11/14)

The Yankees travel to Baltimore to take on the first place Orioles in an important divisional series. Chris Capuano (0-1, 2.84 ERA) will be on the mound for the Bombers and Bud Norris (9-7, 3.68 ERA) will go for the O's. Capuano took a no decision his last time out, but he still out-dueled Justin Verlander. In 6 2/3 innings, he allowed just one unearned run on five hits and a walk while striking out eight.

Norris has a 2.63 ERA since the break, but his last time out was rocky. He threw a shaky 5 1/3 innings but his offense bailed him out with enough run support to beat the Blue Jays.

New York is 3-6 against the Orioles this season, 1-2 in Baltimore. "They're important games because we're chasing them, and they have a lead in our division, and that's where we want to be, on top of the division," Joe Girardi said. "We have 10 more games with them, but the important thing is that we continue to take series. You need to do that if you want to play in October."

The Orioles have been in a drivers seat of the AL East for most of the season, and they haven't looked back. "Regardless of what the other teams do, you control something today in your game," Buck Showalter said. "If you start thinking how Toronto, Boston, New York and Tampa does every day, with 40 something games left, you can't live in that world. And our guys don't. They don't scoreboard watch, they scoreboard glance. We've got to assume the other teams are going to win every game they play."

Notes on the game

Capuano hasn't started against Baltimore in pinstripes, but has 3 2/3 inning of relief against them with 2 runs allowed in that time.

Michael Pineda has had two Minor League rehab starts and said he could be ready to return to the rotation as early as this series. Girardi has no updates on him.
