Preview: Yankees vs Rangers (7/24/14)

The series with Texas comes to a close with Brandon McCarthy (1-0, 1.42 ERA) taking on Colby Lewis (6-7, 6.37 ERA) in a weekday matinee. McCarthy's home debut in the Bronx was a success. He threw six innings of one run ball allowing six hits, no walks and an impressive nine Ks, the most since April with Arizona. "It's nice that it's just at least a good first impression," said McCarthy. "Mostly, the way the season's gone, it's just more positive outings, more positive outings, and get back to where I want to be and just build on success. Whether it's here or in Arizona, I just wanted to get back into a successful groove and feel like myself again."
Lewis took a loss his last time out, but it was a vast improvement over the start before that. He allowed two runs on eight hits over five innings after surrendering a franchise high 13 runs (11 earned) on 13 hits in the previous start. "I have to continue to do what I was doing in my last start," Lewis said. "I feel like I was throwing the ball really well. I was locating my offspeed pitches. I need to continue to do that. I could cut back a couple of walks, but other than that, I feel like I'm in a pretty good place with the feel of my pitches and how my body feels."
Lewis hasn't pitched a regular season start against the Yankees in almost 11 years. His last regular season start came on August 5, 2003. He pitched twice in the postseason against them in the 2011 postseason and was 2 0 with a 1.98 ERA, but both games were in Arlington. "I think it's kind of cool to be able to pitch in the old Yankee Stadium and the new Yankee Stadium," said Lewis. "It might be a new stadium, but the ghosts are still here. They just came across the street," said manager Ron Washington. "This place and Boston give you butterflies."
