Red Sox crush Yankees, 14-1, in first meeting of 2018
BOSTON — In a battle between aces, it was Chris Sale that came out on top, as he led the Boston Red Sox to a huge win over the New York Yankees, 14-1, at Fenway Park. A nine-run sixth inning was more than enough for Boston to take home the win.
Mookie Betts paced the Red Sox with a perfect night at the plate, reaching five times, scoring five runs, and driving in four. Hanley Ramirez added three more RBIs, while Andrew Benintendi and JD Martinez contributed two RBIs each in the offensive attack.
As for the Yankees, an Aaron Judge solo shot in the fifth inning was the only run that crossed the plate off of Sale, who struck out eight in six innings of work.

The Red Sox jumped on Luis Severino early, who allowed five runs on eight hits. A Ramirez RBI single started the scoring in the first before Benintendi hit a triple down the right field line, that brought home both Christian Vasquez and Betts in the next frame. That extended Boston’s lead to 3-0. The Red Sox would plate two more before the Yankees would first score.
While New York was able to get its fair share of hits off of Sale, eight to be exact, it was not before the booming shot by Judge that the Bombers were able to get on the board. It was his third hit of the day off Sale, which led the team tonight.
In the game, the Yankees just were not able to string together big hits. As for the Red Sox, everything was going their way, as showcased by a monstrous nine-run sixth.
Tommy Kahnle was once again unable to get outs, as he was torched for five runs. Chasen Shreve tried to stop the bleeding but he was also hit for four more runs, though all unearned, due to a Miguel Andujar error that extended the inning.
With five runs already in in the inning, Betts would make the most of the New York error. He took a Shreve pitch and hit a grand slam that essentially put the result of the game no longer in doubt.
Joe Kelly and Brian Johnson shut out the Yankees to seal the win for Boston.
New York was just outhit, 11-10, but the team did not make the most of its opportunities. Giancarlo Stanton and Didi Gregorius each had two hits, but Gary Sanchez remained silent, as his batting average dropped to .056 on the season. Neil Walker also had a hit from the leadoff spot, as Brett Gardner was given the day-off, with a lefty on the mound.
In the game, Shane Robinson made his Yankee debut, playing center field. Jace Peterson was DFA’d before the game to make room. Thankfully for New York, Aaron Hicks is on track to return to the team sometime during this series.
The series continues tomorrow as Masahiro Tanaka faces David Price.
Current Yankees Record: 5-6
