Sanchez's homer enough for Yankees to sweep Angels

ANAHEIM -- Gary Sanchez hit his seventh home run of the season, a two-run shot in the fourth inning, and that was all the Yankees needed. In the first of four series against World Series contenders, New York completed a sweep of the Los Angeles Angeles, 2-1, at Angels Stadium.

On the mound, CC Sabathia was dominant, giving up just one run in seven innings of work. He allowed just five hits and a walk, while striking out four Angels.

Overall, it was a difficult day for the Yankee offense as LA starter Tyler Skaggs was effective, as well.

His only mistakes came when he allowed subsequent extra-base hits in the fourth to Giancarlo Stanton and Sanchez that resulted in the only New York runs of the day.

The Angels only run came in the sixth, when a Sabathia slider got past Sanchez for a wild pitch. That allowed Justin Upton to cross the plate and cut the Yankee lead in half.

In tonight's game, Los Angeles in fact outhit the Yankees, 6-4, but the former was just unable to cash in in key moments.

To close it out, Chad Green pitched the eighth and Aroldis Chapman earned his sixth save with a two-strikeout performance in the ninth.

Interestingly enough, Gleyber Torres remains undefeated in his young Major League career, moving to 8-0.

In the day, Albert Pujols also moved closer to reaching the 3000 hit plateau with a single in the sixth inning.

Sonny Gray takes the mound for tomorrow's series opener against Charlie Morton and the Houston Astros.
