September 14, 1996: Yankees defeat Blue Jays, win streak now at five
The Yankees have found their mojo again, as they've matched their longest win streak of the season at five games. They defeated a tough pitcher in Pat Hentgen today by a score of 3-1, and maintained their 3.5 game lead over the Orioles.
Kenny Rogers started for the Yankees ands forced to leave early with shoulder inflammation. He went just four innings and gave up one run - the only run Toronto would get on the day. Brian Boehringer came on in relief and gave the Yankees three-innings of hitless ball. He turned the ball over to Mariano Rivera and John Wetteland, who also each pitched hitless frames.
The Yankee offense torched Hentgen for 11 hits over his 8.2 innings, but they only scored three runs. In the eighth down 1-0, Paul O'Neill drove home Bernie Williams with a double to tie the game. Cecil Fielder then singled in Ruben Rivera to take the lead. New York added an insurance run in the ninth after Derek Jeter chipped in with an RBI single.
Ramiro Mendoza starts tomorrow against Woody Williams.
