September 23, 1996: Yankees lose to Red Sox in extras
In a highly entertaining series finale, the Yankees came up short after losing to the Red Sox 4-3 in 11 innings.
Tied at one in the eighth inning, the Yankees scored two runs on two separate wild pitches from Boston reliever Heathcliff Slocumb to take a 3-1 lead. John Wetteland came on looking for his 43rd save, but instead, he allowed two unearned runs on singles from Darren Bragg and Mo Vaughn. The game then went into extras, where Graeme Lloyd surrendered an RBI single to Vaughn in the 11th. The Yankees staged a comeback rally in the bottom half, but Bernie Williams lined out to left with runners on first and second to end the game.
Andy Pettitte got the start for New York against Roger Clemens. Pettitte certainly pitched well enough to win, going eight innings and allowing just one run on eight hits. Clemens went seven and gave up one run on five hits while striking out eight.
The runs that scored on Slocumb's wild pitchers were charged to Vaughn Eshelman. Slocumb tossed 2.2 innings of scoreless ball, followed by Mark Brandenburg and Pat Mahomes who shut the Yankees down. Aside from the wild pitches that scored two Yankees runs, the offense was dormant. New York's only other run came on a Jim Leyritz double in the second inning.
New York's division lead remains at four with six games to go after Baltimore lost to the Brewers 8-7.
