Torreyes comes up big offensively and defensively in Yankees’ victory

NEW YORK – Ronald Torreyes is the definition of a super utility player, filling in for the New York Yankees whenever they have needed him this season. Not only has he provided some players with much needed days of rest, Torreyes is hitting nearly .300 this season and came through with the game winning hit in the first game of the series against the Texas Rangers. Despite being only 5 feet 8 inches tall, Torreyes packs a punch on offense and shows tremendous range as a defender. In his 23 games played this season, Torreyes has yet to commit and error and showed off his skill set in the much-needed victory over the Rangers. To start off the night Torreyes prevented any damage from happening in the third when he dove to his left and started an inning ending double play.

Again, in the top of the seventh inning, Torreyes made a great snag at third base on a sharply hit ball down the line by Rangers’ shortstop, Elvis Andrus. Andrus is a speedy runner but Torreyes managed to throw him out by getting rid of the ball as quickly as possible – arriving in Chris Carter’s glove just before the speedy shortstop touched first base.

Starting pitcher Masahiro Tanaka returned to ace form in large part due to Torreyes’ terrific defense. Tanaka did not allow a single earned run over his eight innings pitched and struck out nine Rangers’ batters.

Following Brett Gardner’s game tying home run in the bottom of the ninth inning, Torreyes ended the game with an RBI single to center field. “I just wanted to put a good swing on the ball and we were able to walk away with a victory,” he said. Torreyes, who is only 24 years old, has become an asset for the Yankees and someone they can trust to deliver a critical hit when they need it most.
