WATCH: Yankees' prospects Gleyber Torres, Jorge Mateo take BP
Just last spring, the crop of shortstop prospects in the Yankees farm system was headlined by a quick and versatile 20-year-old. This year, another 20-year-old is taking over the spotlight. On Sunday, Yankees No. 1 prospect Gleyber Torres and No. 4 prospect Jorge Mateo (Baseball America rankings) took batting practice in the same group at George M. Steinbrenner Field. They made an impression on manager Joe Girardi and general manager Brian Cashman, who were watching behind the cage. "Gleyber Torres uses the field extremely well, has opposite-field power, and for a young hitter to have that type of discipline and approach is pretty impressive," Girardi told NJ Advance Media. "I think he has handled the expectations well up until this point. Obviously when we acquired him, his name was a big name in that trade and he went out and won the MVP of the Fall League. "I like what I see from him. He's a strong young man that uses the whole field and he's got a lot of life in his bat. He's played shortstop well. I see why people are excited about him and we're very excited." As for Mateo, the 6-foot, 188-pound 21-year-old played in 113 with High-A Tampa last season, finishing with an average of .254 with eight home runs and 47 runs batted in. He also struck out 108 times and stole 36 bases on 51 attempts. Here below is video of Torres and Mateo at the plate, courtesy of NJ Advance Media:
