Why the Yankees-Bryce Harper dream may not come true next winter

If the Yankees intend to make a sales pitch to Washington Nationals' stud outfielder Bryce Harper during the 2018-19 offseason, perhaps wads of cash won't be enough to convince the soon-to-be free agent to play in the Big Apple. During All-Star Game festivities earlier this week, Harper told multiple reporters he isn't too fond of New York City, and that his preference -- if possible -- would be to play in one city for his entire career. "Going to New York City for a couple days... I want to get out of there in about three days,” Harper said. “You go there for three days, it’s pretty crazy and hectic and I want to go back home. I want to go back home to D.C.” Although his disdain for New York Mets fans was also expressed this week, the 24-year-old has acknowledged his admiration for the Yankees' tradition and success. “That's the thing I want to do in D.C.,” Harper said of the Yanks' history. "They've got a lot of great talent, but that’s their team, and [Aaron] Judge is doing a great job being a leader of that team. He’s paving the way for all of those guys out there. But I just try to focus on doing what I can to help [the Nationals] win on a daily basis." Harper is expected to headline a historic free agent class next winter, which could also include stars Manny Machado and Clayton Kershaw.
