Yankees executive Gene 'Stick' Michael dies at 79

Gene "Stick" Michael, the Yankees executive who rebuilt the Yankees during the 1990's dynasty, has died of a heart attack at the age of 79.

The New York Daily News reported Michael underwent a heart procedure earlier this year, but had kept the news private from the media.

Michael was responsible for rebuilding the Yankees farm system, which included Derek Jeter, Andy Pettitte, Mariano Rivera, and Jorge Posada. He also was responsible for trading Roberto Kelly for Paul O'Neill, a major move that made an impact on the organization from day one. He also signed Buck Showalter as manager.

Michael managed the Yankees from 1981-82 and was the GM from 1991-95.

The Yankees won four World Championships in 1996, 1998, 1999, and 2000.
