Yankees game 106 preview (8/5/15)
Welcome to the show Luis Severino! No time to soak in, you're making your debut on the national stage against Steven Wright (4-4, 4.53 ERA) and the rival Red Sox. Severino is the Yankees number one prospect and finally got the call up after Cash did absolutely nothing at the deadline. Well I shouldn't say nothing, he did get us Dustin Ackley... In 11 starts in Triple-A this year, he is 7-0 with a 1.91 ERA.
The 21 year old Dominican Republic native was signed by the team as an international free agent in 2012. He made is debut for the Dominican Summer League Yankees that year going 4-2 with a 1.68 ERA and 45 K's in 64 1/3 innings. He was promoted to Single-A in 2013 and again finished 4-2 with a 2.45 ERA and 53 K's through 10 games (eight starts.) In 2014, he was with the Tampa Yankees and after being selected to the futures game was sent up to Double-A. He was 6-5 with a 2.46 ERA between the three teams. 2015 saw him come up to Triple-A where he flourished and impressed the brass so much that he was deemed untouchable in any trade deadline talks. After hearing about him for a few years, everyone from Cash to the grounds crew is eager to see him in the Majors. No pressure kid.
Wright is coming off his best outing of the season. He held the White Sox to two runs over a career high seven innings while K-ing eight. It was enough to get the win as he outlasted Chris Sale. This will be his second time seeing the Yanks this year, first start. He was the last pitcher used out of the pen back in April during that 19 inning gauntlet. He went five innings giving up two runs on six hits and wound up with the win.
